Triumphant! Glorious! Splendid! Free!”

Dan L. Williams Jr., 86, Zionsville, Indiana passed from this world on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020. He was born on Sunday, Dec. 17, 1933, to Dan Williams Sr., and Anna Julia Brownfield Williams in Gary, Indiana. He was the first born to Dan Sr. and Anna Julia after the Williams family moved from the south to Gary in pursuit of greater job opportunities in the developing steel city.
Dan’s upbringing was rooted in his family’s church, Bethlehem AME Zion Church in Gary. As a young man and graduate of Roosevelt High School’s Class of 1951, he enlisted in the US Army. After an honorable discharge, Dan continued to serve others as former Post Commander VFW Post 2151 and former AMVETS member in Gary.
As a civil servant, Dan’s professional career began with the U.S. Postal Service but he had greater aspirations: to own and operate his own business. He invested his life’s savings to purchase a Shell gas station in Gary. As a franchisee, he was proud to make it a family business.
After being faced with unexpected circumstances, Dan closed the station and proceeded to carry on his career at Leisure Curl in Gary before retiring from a security role at Trump Casino in East Chicago, Indiana.
Dan made each person feel as though they were best friends; he cared deeply about others. His charm, intelligence and impeccable style attracted friends from all walks of life. Many knew him to be the life of the party. Next to his dad, there was no one else who loved hosting large gatherings more, from good barbecue to special themes. He especially loved family trips to Michigan.
One of Dan’s proudest moments was hosting his parents’ 50th anniversary celebration. He was also fortunate to experience love and marriage, while ultimately preferring to live as a bachelor.
Dan stood firm in his beliefs about the world, right and wrong. And yet he was compassionate enough to understand everyone is human. His loved ones appreciated his ability to joke about life and to also offer his wisdom. If he had the means, whether time or money, he was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Dan was always determined to live life on his own terms. He maintained his life independently with sound mind and spirit. During his retirement, he relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he enjoyed more time with his family. Dan survived many challenges throughout his life, from prostate cancer, a heart condition and diabetes to COVID-19. He left this world only to be free, breathe easier, and rest peacefully.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents Dan Williams Sr., and Anna Julia Brownfield Williams, brother Richard C. Williams Sr.
He is survived by his daughter Daniese Roberson, 2 grandchildren Sanyea J. Ceaser and Anna Kimble-Roberson, great-grandson Emerson Kimble-Roberson, sister Irlean Smith, close relative Willie Booker, Jr., dear friend Kevin McFadden, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family and friends.
Oh Danny Boy, he shared with us a lifetime of wonderful memories and is missed by all who loved him.
